Welcome to my blog Upstate Girl, (a.k.a Follow Your Bliss Part II), I am an independently published author. This blog is all about writing and the stuff that inspires me to write, the joys and obstacles that come along with the writer's life, and my fascination with the psychology of people and what makes them tick...the human condition, as is...and my love for words, playing with them and making sense of them...and I throw in a few photos from my acre of the world just to make things pretty...sometimes there are things I have no words for, only pictures will do.

*Copyright notice* All photos, writing, and artwork are mine (

February...

tracks in the snow
It's been a long strange winter, hardly any snow...when we get it, it melts in a day or two, or it's in the form of styrofoam-like balls of ice that are like driving on marbles...and then the rain and gray. There is a slight chance of sun today (or so I've heard), but the layers of gray seem impenetrable for the time being. I feel a little bit at a loss without having to slog around in knee deep snow while walking the dog...it's nothing to complain about, I'm not complaining, just observing like I do, peering out the window at the brown and gray season that is normally swathed in white powder brought to us by the great lake Ontario or some crabby Nor' Easter scrambling up the Atlantic seaboard, raising hell...I miss having a good blustery storm roaring in, messing things up for a day or two and then the calm, crystalline day after that is always a beautiful relief.

Last weekend a very brief event blew through our little acre of the world, shook the house, made the walls creak, the windows rattle and my desk swayed...I paused and thought, "Do I need to go in the basement?" Whatever it was, it was over in less than a minute, I noticed out the window that there was crazy sideways blowing snow in the headlights of passing cars, and then nothing just as sudden as it started. Weird. I really admire Mother Nature, she's awesome.

How about them Republicans? Huh (scratches head). I know I'm at times baffled. Fidel Castro weighed in via Newsweek that the Republican Primary race is "the greatest competition of idiocy and ignorance there has ever been." No shit, he's still alive? Trampolines vs. safety nets...we can't have both I guess. Yeah, whatever...talk talk talk...there's so much hot air coming from this campaign it's no wonder there's no snow in Central New York...

Back to the lack of snow...

If you think about it all the SuperPac money being spent on the Presidential campaign ads would help a shit load of poor people...and maybe have some left over to do something else good for the nation...

All I can say is it's an ugly election season...

The division between ideologies has invaded my family in a small-ish way a few months back...my sister-in-law unfriended me (and her brother) on Facebook because of our liberal leanings...claiming we're too angry...me angry? I don't think I'm angry at all, if anything, I'm just sensible and I can't stand ignorance, intolerance, and the flood of lies that support ignorance and intolerance...

Blah, blah, blah...

I want some silence and contemplation time this weekend...and maybe a peek or two of sunshine.

Christmas Eve 2010

My tree is an 8ft tall concolor fir... full of white lights...

We've had freezing drizzle on top of our snow, and then snow on top of the freezing drizzle with temps dipping into the teens, so the trees, bushes, and weeds are covered in spiky hoar frost.

More Snow...

Sunset Snow, 12/8/2010
I'm embracing this wintry weather through my camera (which I do every year)...and as Grandma Moses put it "everyone knows that snow sparkles with the sunshine on it"...and at sunset it  picks up such pretty colors! (shot with my old camera) The snow weary CNY Upstate area saw the sun for the first time in several days, but more snow on the way tonight! They say some places might receive an inch or more an hour in the more intense bands of lake effect snow showers...great...lake. (Thanks!) Just out there with the dog a few minutes ago...the stars are out and it's bitter burrrrr cold! Looking at the radar on the NOAA website, the snow is north of the NYS Thruway above Syracuse...but we're all prepared for it to show up anywhere at anytime, it's random like that...keeps life interesting!

Our chairs on the patio...two days ago...they're nearly gone now, the snow has drifted around them. (I love the old-time feel of this image!) I took the photo through my dining room window at twilight Monday night using my new camera.

Ice-scapes...

I've been having fun studying icicles up close... pretty stuff... we have plenty of it after the Nor'easter dumped over 2 feet on our hilltop acre on Thursday...and it's still snowing...it hasn't really stopped...dang.

Our friend's garage fell down yesterday afternoon because of the weight of the snow...be careful out there!

I've been deep into the final proofreading of The Fractured Hues of White Light and have reached the halfway point...I'm reading the whole proof backwards so I'm in chapter 14 today, and hope to be entering chapter 13 by tonight...not "going with the flow" really helps me catch the last stragglers that I want out, or if I'm really unhappy with a sentence, I'll rewrite it on the spot. I'll do my best to make it as 'squeaky clean' as possible before she is printed...

I'm putting up two copies of Dusty Waters: A Ghost Story for a giveaway at Library Thing, starting today I believe...I didn't see it on the list yet, it was still pending as of this morning...

Please enjoy the photos of the "Ice-scapes"...there's critter pictures at the end...

I'm a sucker for the vertical orientation of these shards of ice... I tried a few horizontal, but enjoyed them more as verticals...

This is "Pinky 'Possum' who has been visiting our bird feeders for about a week, she's not very big (that's why I think she's a she, the lady opossums tend to be smaller than the boyz.) She is quiet and doesn't seem to mind us much, I have to keep Max on a leash while she's there, he's soooo excited to make friends, but I don't want him to tangle with the little fur ball, make her play dead or anything... I just love that little face (and she does wiggle the little ears, how funny!) I'm sure, there will be moments when she'll become a nuisance critter... if necessary, I'll trap her in a have-a-heart and release her so she can be happy somewhere else.

I caught a rather blurry shot of a crow landing on the snow, I loved the open wing...I'm fooling around with it in Photoshop, this is what I have so far...

Last but not least, my faithful dog, the Best of Good Boys, Max! (The day after the snow storm, after my Fred dug out the driveway!) For ONCE he looked at the camera with ears in full bloom!

Winter...

I snagged this picture through the window this afternoon...I knew that I couldn't suit up fast enough and I didn't want to miss the sunshine on the snow, there was just a small hole in the clouds!
